Friday, July 27, 2007 4:09:07 AM Cars are only the safest place if you happen to be touching no metal at all. If you were taking your car keys out.. Game over. |

Friday, July 27, 2007 2:47:20 AM Mini-van 1, Zeus 0Yeah, the only real danger is that it knocks out your car. Of course, with rain that bad, you shouldn't be driving fast anyways. "mini-vans are evil" Better than SUVs... Screw the H2 and Scion xB, the crappiest vehicles ever! |

Thursday, July 26, 2007 9:44:21 PM "the reason why cars are the safest place isn't because they aren't struck by lightning, but if they are it just doesn't get to the inside because it goes right to the ground, so it really doesn't matter if it gets struck." - NO, it DOESN'T go into the ground, if it was grounded you'd be dead. |

Thursday, July 26, 2007 9:42:10 PM "the lightning just goes through the metal to the ground" - WTF are you talking about!? The safest place to be in a lightning storm is your car because IT IS INSULATED FROM THE GROUND BY YOUR TIRES, so NO electricity can pass through it and therefore you don't get shocked. You can hold onto a million volts and provided you're not grounded, you won't feel it. The antenna took the hit because it was a metal pole reaching upward, ie a lightning conductor that wasn't grounded. If those people in the car had one of those "anti car sickness" metal straps (that are total BS by the way) at the back of the car, they'd have been totally fried, so your car is only safe IF you don't have one of those. |

Thursday, July 26, 2007 7:26:36 PM Actually the tires don't really do anything. Electricity will travel on the surface of metal not through it. Pretty much you could be licking the inside of the roof during a strike and you'd be fine. |

Thursday, July 26, 2007 5:57:41 PM My dad's car got struck by lightning once. We were on our way home from Key west on I 75 outside of Tifton GA. It hit the radio antenna on the back of the car pretty much right behind my head. We all heard a loud bang almost like a gunshot and the car died immediatley, except for the radio for some weird reason. When we pulled over the people who were behind us pulled over and told us what happened. The lightning jumped from the car to the median and set the grass on fire. None of us were hurt or felt any type of electrical charge. The funny thing is that it wasn't even raining yet we were on the very edge of the storm so it was completly unexpected. |

Thursday, July 26, 2007 5:15:45 PM Stating something is hotter than the sun can be very misleading. Nearly 100% of the time they'll say it in reference to the surface of the sun, not the core. The core is somewhere in the 10 000 000 K |
