AND no, they didn't really explain what was the steam for... so you can steamcook your potatoes while you're strolling around the streets! :D

^^Any kind of power plant will EXPLODE if not taken care of properly. Dams, nuclear plants, anything!

What good idea except for the fact that they EXPLODE if not taken care of properly!

Snoogans - the same goes for electricity. Water, wind, and solar alone cannot produce enough for the masses. So we have to rely on fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) and nuclear. And surprisingly, nuclear is still the cheapest (and safest) to produce (at least safer in the U.S... I can't speak for the other countries).

patriotpappy.....couldn't agree with you more. I work for a large municipal water treatment plant and some people think that water just "magically" comes out of the faucet without realizing the amount of work going on behind the scene. That said, this article could have been a little more interesting, but then again it's about steam....not exactly the most exciting topic....kinda like my post is going =) Anyhoo....they said when the pipe bust it sent stuff 70 stories in the air!

And all along you just thought life was good and no one or no thing was actually having to do anything to make your life comfortable.

Interesting article. Thanks for the post. I always wondered about all the steam coming up from the streets too.

Fascinating, and good common sense. Using "waste" steam to heat and power buildings. Smart use of technology, from the 1880s!

I've never ever wondered that, but it's good to know. In a Trivia-Pursuit kind of way.

shanir, they're not sewer pipes, they're STEAM pipes. Dork.

That was kind of neat to learn, actually. A city like New York definitely uses a lot of power, and this helps to reduce the possibility of running out. Night Terrors!
