Tuesday, June 05, 2007 10:31:59 AM "I was a chem teacher for 5 years." Mm, chemistry... one of my favorite subjects. Anyway, this is pretty cool. I'd do it but I lack sodium acetate right now, and I'm too lazy to make any. :] That, and I don't think I have any clean pots. |

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 8:49:22 AM According to Wikipedia, you can make your own sodium acetate using baking soda and vinegar.84 grams of sodium bicarbonate react with 750 g of 8% vinegar to make 82 g sodium acetate in water. By subsequently boiling off most of the water, one can refine either a concentrated solution of sodium acetate or actual crystals. |

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 8:45:50 AM Thanks for the props, notapervert. I was a chem teacher for 5 years. You really can't use sugar, the solubility (how much dissolves) is too low. When water is heated, the solubility of sodium acetate skyrockets. When cooled, the solution becomes "supersaturated". Kungfu sage is correct. That starting crystal is called the "nucleation site". Look up nucleation. |

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 8:10:19 AM I wonder if I can get this stuff from my school! I school ask my old middle school teacher...he'd give it to me. And if they didn't have it, he's probably order it just so he could show his class. |

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 6:54:17 AM the reason it didn't solidify when it was poured into the pan is because for it to "freeze" it has to have something to freeze onto. the glass pan was clean and smooth so there was nothing for the crystals to form around. but when you touch it the crystals form on your finger and then the crystals form on other crystals and so on till it is all solid. It's the same thing with the bubbles in a pop bottle when you drop in the life saver mints. |
