Wednesday, June 06, 2007 6:25:20 PM Phoneix you cant improvise by figuring out the proportion like you said you did. First you must have an 8%. Percent concentration does not have anything to do with proprtionality because for teh reaction to occur it should proably be 8 percent. If you are making your own acetate then you know that for the reaction to proceed forward and be exothermic, its got to be 8 percentThey were wrong in the video. In exothermic reactions, heat LEAVES hence the exo part of exothermic. TO get to 8 percent here is an easy way if you have some kind of knolwedge of chemistry here is the math formula for it for easy computation (molarity1)(Volume1)=(molarity2)(volume2) so for M1 you would put 5 percent Volume 1 you put whatever volume you think is good for you. Molarity 2 you put 8 percent Volume 2 you put an X because you are solving for it. Use math to find out how much volume must evoporate to get an 8 percent solution. Ask if you need help. |

Wednesday, June 06, 2007 2:48:14 PM Ah, it's a chemical reaction that makes the water give out heat. That would explain it quite nicely. |

Wednesday, June 06, 2007 12:38:18 AM "Shame on all you who said it was supercooled"It IS supercooled. The melting point of sodium acetate is 58 °C. Since room temperature is roughly 23 °C, it should be a solid, but it remains in its liquid form. |

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 11:38:45 PM I made sodium acetate using vinegar and baking soda. I only had 5% concentrated vinger so I figured out the proportion so it would be like 8%. The baking soda was old cause it was use in the fridge. Anway I got the acetate made but it was a little on the brown side. I brought some water to about boiling temp (190 F) and added quite a bit of acetate. I put it in a pyrex mesauring cup and put it in the fridge for a good 40 minutes. The acetate just settled on the bottom and some was suspended in the water but it didn't do anything. Can someone tell me how to do it right and if the impurties in the baking soda would have caused in to wrong? |

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 10:03:37 PM Sodium Chloride, NaCl, is salt.Sodium Acetate NaC2H3O2 is a component of the fizz made when you mix baking soda and vinegar together. |
