Wednesday, May 09, 2007 12:28:02 AM 'peas as big as radishes, and strawberries as big as apples'. Oh yeah, and the one that said 'animals won't have horns, there won't be any wild animals, and we will breed them ONLY for the stuff they provide'. nowadays the animal rights activists will kill you if you pull your dog's tail. |

Sunday, May 06, 2007 1:11:32 PM After reading this I found it hard to believe it. There were several inconstancies that I found, the average lifespan was longer then 35 years, boars have never been able to outrun horse and the ladies home journal was a magerzine roughly the eqivalent to the modern gossip mag. It dealt with housewife issue including relationships, cleaning and cooking. It was aimed at the middleclass and the current issues dealing with women at that time, the main one being womens suffrage. This journal was not the same as todays journals which are meant to be scholarly this was an informal gossip mag and would probs not contain something that was compiled by the foremost people of their fields. John Elfreth Watkins seems to be someone heavily involved with the railroads. Several words and phrases also ring bells I don't believe the word car had been invented and also most people can tell you that langauge doesn't evolve so fast that letters are removed and spelling is revolusnised in a century. |

Friday, May 04, 2007 3:20:16 PM There will be air-ships, but they will not successfully compete with surface cars and water vessels for passenger or freight traffic. They will be maintained as deadly war-vessels by all military nations. Some will transport men and goods. that was rite! to rite...... hmmmmm ...time travel? |

Friday, May 04, 2007 2:25:28 PM @Baalthazaq You have to love the 1k char limit. The Model T is correctly NOT the first automobile. Just the first to be mass produced, which made it in turn affordable to many (due to Fords refinement of the assembly line) and becomes more entrenched in society to where everyone (generally speaking) would know what one is. Thus the posting of such. So the correction by Baalthazag is duly noted. My thanks. And thank you the_duke for doing my dirty work against ieatbunnies. The term 'automobile' still goes to the Italian panter Martini. |

Friday, May 04, 2007 12:07:35 PM Prediction #11: No Mosquitoes nor Flies. Insect screens will be unnecessary. Mosquitoes, house-flies and roaches will have been practically exterminated. Boards of health will have destroyed all mosquito haunts and breeding-grounds, drained all stagnant pools, filled in all swamp-lands, and chemically treated all still-water streams. The extermination of the horse and its stable will reduce the house-fly. Why didn't this one come true!?!?!? |

Friday, May 04, 2007 2:42:00 AM ieatbunnies:"You are partly correct, automobile was derived and the phrase coined before 1900, but it was named after Nicolaus Otto and his first combustable engine in 1876. And automobile was coined by Gottlieb Daimler when he tooks Ottos engine and attached it to a stagecoach. Although some argue it was Wilhelm Maybach around the same years." François Isaac de Rivaz created the first internal combustion engine in 1806. Do you really think that someone would bastardize someone's name from Otto to auto when, coincidently, the object in question propels itself? That is a huge leap of faith. I'm not sure where you think you learned that little tidbit, but maybe you should consider thinking or looking things up before posting. Beyond that, 2 Italians patented Otto's engine 22 years before he created it. Finally, Ferdinand Verbiest may have built the first steam powered car around 1672. All of this = you lose. |

Friday, May 04, 2007 1:12:03 AM That's fantastic, that they predicted so many things that in a round-about way have come true. My favorite though is:Prediction #16: There will be No C, X or Q in our every-day alphabet. They will be abandoned because unnecessary. Spelling by sound will have been adopted, first by the newspapers. English will be a language of condensed words expressing condensed ideas, and will be more extensively spoken than any other. Russian will rank second. |
