Hehe, if I were the Dell Tech, I would have kept asking pointless questions until he gets so fed up he hangs up.
For ex.

"What did you have for dinner last night?"
"What is your favorite type of music?"
"*ahem* Why do you still live with your mother?"
"How many times do you go to the bathroom per day?"
"Do you do #1 or #2 more frequently?"
"What is wrong with your computer again? *waits 5 minutes while he explains* I'm sorry did you say something?"
"So what toppings would you like on your pizza?"
"Are you homo-sexual?"
"What is your mother's name?"
"Is your head on fire?"

And stupid stuff like that....and then I would be fired XD
lol

Ok, I actually work in a call center and the rep was not being a jerk at all. What most people don't realize, if someone calls for information for a product that has personal information attached to it, customer service reps have to verify the info BEFORE disclosing information on the account. If we don't do this, we get fired. It's not worth losing a job because some non-nice individual doesn't feel like verifying information, the whole thing takes 30 seconds of the customer's time. I get non-nice individuals like this everyday that yell at me because they don't feel like giving their name. The nice thing about my job is if I get an abusive customer, I'm allowed to hang up.

I am not a fan of Dell tech support at all although this this caller was being a prick. This call sounds like it was recorded pre-child- outsourced-labor days. Dell is going the way of Packard Bell in the US, down the pootier. Your better off building your own PC or having one built locally for you.

"I SWEAR TO GOD!"

I wasn't as vocal in my Dellish experience.

They do ask for your service tag 5-10 time during the same call.

"Now sir, I just need to verify that your favorite color is green, is that correct?" jk

I used to deal with people like that on the phone all day long for years. I think the Dell guy could have been a lot more understanding and helpful instead of being such an a$$. I could've de-escalated that call and helped the guy in thirty seconds flat.

yeah...I completely sympathize with the tech agent. I do exactly that as a job...I work in a call center, and it's in our CONTRACT to ask questions at the beginning of the call to verify the customer's identity...people just don't understand that this is for their own security. Sure, he was only calling to ask how to turn his computer off...but how does the tech guy know he wasn't gonna turn around and ask for password resets and such? this is why we verify the identity before hand :P

I have a dell laptop, so I knew exactly what to do right from the start. Also, I love audio clips like this: My favourite is one that was on here a long time ago, about a guy who got a call from a telemarketer: "THIS IS AN EX-DIRECTORY NUMBER AND THAT INCLUDES F*CKING BRITISH TELECOM!!!" "I TOLD YOU NOT TO RING ME AGAIN!!!" Hahaha, and the insane lady who called the telemarketer a murderer, and went on about how people have died because they couldn't call 911 because a telemarketer was calling. Hahaha!!! Anyone remember those ones? Anyway, Telemarketers dont usually call me, but when they do, I'm not in a bad mood, so I'm usually nice to them. I never got one phoning to try to sell me something, I just get surveys.

LOL - "My number is the same as my MOM'S!"

To be honest, the guy sounded a little old to still be living with mom. I guess though, with an attitude like that, apparently he isn't married. I guess living with his mom makes sense - she is the only one who would put up with that kind of personality.

The Customer Service Tech is SUPPOSED to ask those questions. If I were that guy, I would just keep asking questions. Kill them with kindness - it makes the customers more upset and you get satisfaction! I would've also thrown in, "Have a WONDERFUL day!"

omg that was funny. People who don't know how to turn computers off shouldn't get computers. Especially when they don't bother to look in the manual for troubleshooting BEFORE calling customer service. And the tech didn't ask those questions to piss him off, he has to. Only time I called customer service was when the router crapped out, it was annoying, waiting 45 minutes. But I was polite, the dude asked how long it would take to drive from Cali to Miami, cause apparently he was going to some drag racing thingy in Miami...cause I live in FL and what not...that was interesting.

I saw a lot of comments wondering why the technician didn't give the answer right away. While I do not work for Dell, the same principles apply:
- Techs should not support competitors' products (at least not for free.) Some companies don't provide support for out-of-warranty products.
- Techs need to collect contact information for the case in question. It helps identify who is placing the call and how they can be reached - as well as if the contact in question is authorized support on the computer (e.g. the owner may claim only he may call support, which will appear on the account.)
- Techs need to collect information about the computer. This helps track issues with a computer (e.g. if it's lemoning.)

BTW, there's one thing you should know - I have access to a defective notebook, which does not turn off even when holding down the power button. In this case, you have to remove the battery.

Now now, let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he lives with his mother because she's old and he's taking care of her, or has some sort of health problem. I'm sure he's a wonderful, gentle caregiver. Yep, he just fixes her toast in the morning, fetches the mail for her, brings her some fuzzy slippers, wipes up her drool, and tucks her in safely at night.

Okay, so thinking of THAT guy taking care of anyone is kind of a horrifying thought. Let's just continue on with thinking he's a loser living with his mommy. :D
