Sunday, April 01, 2007 5:07:50 AM Back on-topic: Normally I'm in favour of trying stuff just to see if it works, but in this case...no. I just can't support this, unless they had the ramp angled away from the road so the ball would fly towards the side. |

RavenKing, what DavisBoy meant to say is they don't NEED a rear windshield because they're in the desert. He forgot to put the word 'need' in there. |

Saturday, March 31, 2007 2:26:47 AM ^^I don't know how it works in Australia, but here in the western world windshields don't explode. :P And this one was just cracked near the edges. And finally, the question I was going to make... WHAT IS THE PURPOSE of throwing a BOWLING BALL onto a RAMP from a moving car???? |

Saturday, March 31, 2007 12:37:29 AM "No. Vertical and horizontal acceleration velocities are independent of each other."Yeah, in videogame logic, maybe. The ramp redirected the ball upwards. Say the ball was going 30 mph and the ramp smoothly angled up 30 degrees. Then the ball is moving 30mph*cos(30)horizontally (~26 mph) and 30mph*sin(30) vertically (15 mph). So yes, the upward angling of the ball is slowing down its horizontal speed. + loss of energy due to bouncing up and down on the pavement and wind resistance, etc. The ball definitely would not have hit the car if he had kept driving at speed. |

Friday, March 30, 2007 10:16:49 PM That was hilarious. The window just pops right out and smashes on the ground. At first I thought they were actually throwing a bowling ball at the ramp and a car happened to go by. That would have been even funnier. "Oh poo! Let's get out of here!" lol |

So while both car and ball were going at the same speed, the ball is travelling up too meaning less distance forwards."No. Vertical and horizontal acceleration velocities are independent of each other. |

Friday, March 30, 2007 4:23:45 PM "If he didn't hit the brakes it would have worked. The ball loses speed due to frictional heat loss."Frictional heat loss? You mean drag, that's the more accurate term. And it doesn't lose that much speed to drag. I think it's more because of the fact that the ball is travelling upwards as well as forwards. So while both car and ball were going at the same speed, the ball is travelling up too meaning less distance forwards. So by braking the car let the ball "catch up". Kinetic energy lost going upwards instead of forwards is greater than the energy lost as heat due to drag. That energy loss is more or less equal to the kinetic energy lost when the car breaks due to friction. That's why the ball hits the car. There. I think that's right. I feel like someone should put a "Kick Me" sign on my back and throw sharp pencils at my eyes. |

Friday, March 30, 2007 4:23:26 PM What the hell? Where do these people live that they would have to resort to this to amuse themselves? Were they trying to make potholes in the road or see a bowling ball fly?
