The guy's expression in the very last shot says it all.

THE PROTECTOR! SPECIAL BONUS SECTION OF THE DVD SAYS THE SAME SCENE WAS SHOT ABOUT 6 TIMES AND A COUPLE MONTHS APART. TONY JAA FINISHED EVERY TIME BUT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS THEY HAD TO RESHOOT IT OVER AND OVER. IF YOU BUY THE DVD THEY SHOW YOU EVERY TAKE AND THE LITTLE DIFFERENCES IN EACH ONE. THAT WAS THE LAST TAKE AFTER THIS GUY HAD PERFORMED IT LIKE 6 TIMES. AND YES IT IS ONE SHOT FOR ALL THE SKEPTICS

"stolen" from imdb.com

According to the interview with the director contained on the Thai VDC, the continuous fight scene required at least 6 full takes to get right (due to objects not breaking on cue and stunts not executing exactly as planned). Each time the set had to be reset and the breakaway props replaced and Tony Jaa tended to with smelling salts. Because of the physical demands on the cameraman when running with the steady-cam, a second steady-cam operator was required to get all the takes. The final take was the one eventually used, which explains why Tony Jaa looks so tired near the end of the fight (he had done the whole routine 6 times at that point)

This is why I live in a constant state of paranoia when I go to a Chinese restaurant... never know when the beserked Asian man is going to bust in a make a scene...

Sakamura: It really looks to me like it was done in one take. (I actually do CG effects for movies). The asian stunt guys and Tony Jaa are all good enough that, while it would probably take a few tries, it would still be way cheaper than to do it in CG. Typically, asian cinema doesn't have the budget for quality CG anyways, and in particular, this scene would be very hard to edit together from multiple shots, especially with steadicam footage.

So you should find it amazing that it IS exactly as advertised - one continuous take with everybody doing stunts and fighting and everything breaking on cue correctly.

That was awesome...Amazing how much abuse those stunt guys go through...Even if they take all the safety procautions, some of that stuff still has to hurt...><

WHOA.

"I wonder how many times they had to re-run through all of that, or if they got it all on the first shot."
Yeah I thought that... how long may have taken to set up everything back if they messed up! lol

"Why do people always have to cry fake? It's a steadicam, people. You can't save its position. It's attached to a guy running around. They may do a quick edit in the middle of a really quick pan, but this is probably one take."
Amen. Finally someone who knows.

"There was editing. All the punch/kick sounds weren't(and didn't sound) real at all."
That's ALWAYS added AFTERWARDS by the Foley Artist, you dumbo.

That was The Protector, wasn't it? It was a recent movie... I did see it. This was seriously one take? It's amasing for how long it is but then again there isn't a lot of actual fighting.
