It has been basically said already but basically if he goes back in time to save his father he would have never invented the time machine so the whole time-line would altered. |

see, stuff like this just explodes my mind, I cant really get a grip onit.
yeah, it wud be cool if a time machine was invented, but like a few of you have said, what wud happen when you went back in time, and changed something, and then the world that you left wud have changed as well.
you cud seriously mess up alot of things.
maybe this is something that shouldn't be delt with? |

too many paradoxes to count on how this might not actually work...and if it does you actually think theyre going to let you average joe schmo use it? not likely. in the end, at least with people, everything becomes a weapon O.o |

time is the interval between two events, so yes it exists. But its only an idea, no matter how hard scientists want to travel through it. It would be like trying to ride on the back of faith or pull hope, kicking and screaming, through a door that leads to atlantis whilst giving shintoism the finger and expecting it to be offended.
And as soon as they open that portal, Chrono will hop out and slice the neck of everyone around, screaming something or other about a Lavos character. |

so how exactly are they going to test that a subatomic particle is now in the past? or better yet couldnt they just make up their mind today and say "I'm going to look right here, right now and something will appear." if nothing happens they might as well just give up and quit spending money because they couldnt send it in the future. |

So by that theory to travel back in time a person would have to spin around in circles at the speed of light. Then get sucked into the resulting black hole that really has nothing to stop it once its been created and just proceeds to plant the present into the past. This makes reaching to future harder as you have to hop over the time-gap left where the present used to be. or it just makes the past the present and the present the future, but the present cant be the future if its happening right now. So the future doesn't exist anymore, and since the present is still back in the past we've eliminated that as well. What's left? The past. But the past is history, and history is something that was done a while back. So that gone too. I think were screwed

The confusion of what the guy is doing is probably more due to the editors of the TV program. His theory uses frame-dragging, part of the theory of general relativity that states a spinning object drags space and time around itself. The idea is to use circular lasers that generate a gravitation field to create frame-dragging and then dropping a particle in it to get caught in the drag which will allow it to travel back in time. No there is and never will be time travel.. the only way to really travel back in time is turn your clock back that is the only way to do it. I couldn't watch all of this cause to me it is complete bs! |

haha sorry, you dared me. and yeah, messing with time would be pretty sketchy. Imagine a plot hole in the real world, with no author to fill in the gap . Except for that big invisable hand in the sky. It could make things interesting.
Interesting being like a divided by zero time loop drathole no-one can escape from or even know exists. WITH a paper clip through it. All ending(OR BEGINNING?!?) with an inbred creationism theory. Wait....

But if you change the past...and you return to the "altered future"...you wouldn't be in the world you lived in when you decided to time travel back. The unaltered world is lost forever...if there are 3 layers of paper...each is it's own dimension, and you travelled from D1 to D2 and alter D2, when you go back to "D1" it would be changed because of your time travel actions. This altered future is D3. If you killed yourself in D2 past, you still exist because your being is linked to D1 and D3. Even though D2 lost connection with your being doesn't mean you cease to exist. |

Well while the theories sound as close to right as anything I know of there are a few things to note.
1) like you guys said, change the past, change the future
2) he's a prof. at the U. of CT....is anyone else not wowed by this?
3) Most of the theories he was talking about dealing with the 2D world are right out of the book "Flatland" guess we'll have to wait n see... |
