Wednesday, February 28, 2007 1:08:24 PM I'm not a geology major but I'm here and I recently read in a book about the history of salt by Mark Kurlansky about how sinkholes happen, so I'll tell you what I learned from that. Mining is one of the causes. People dig around in the ground, creating pockets of nothing (holes) that are susceptible to natural earth tremors (as in minor earthquake activity), and then decades later the earth caves in at random points as much as 50 miles away, because the underground structure was previously compromised or weakened. I read about an entire town in England that gradually sunk into the earth through sinkhole after sinkhole because of extensive salt-mining in another town one would think would be too far away for something like that to happen....it says in this article that a sewage line is the culprit here. That's consistent from what little I've read about sinkholes. This one's depth is unusual. They're usually not so deep. |
