Monday, January 15, 2007 10:34:21 PM OO, wikipedia says that this stuff is 5.11 times denser than air, which has a density of 1.2 kg/m^3 at room temperature, and that the aerogels are about a 3 kg/m^3. So put 2 and 2 together... you could float an aerogel on this stuff! It would be the ultimate I-A-B science experiment! :O |

Monday, January 15, 2007 10:30:35 PM oooooh i want some i would think that it would fly out into open air or something but i guess it stayed since its heavier? :P |

Monday, January 15, 2007 10:26:56 PM technically, with the right shape, size, etc, of boat, you could float a tin foil boat in a vat of CO2, which is one of the densest gasses, and a hell of a lot more common to boot. Or if you're feeling lucky, methane would be even better, althoug harder to get and more explosive :P. |

Monday, January 15, 2007 8:58:35 PM Yeah I was not amazed by this at all, people are easily amazed, in a few years when knowlege of the gas becomes popular all kinds of tricks will exist.Think of it as half the power or helium in reverse. If you could make your cups float with a healium baloon how big would it be? Well it would be half as effective in floating in a vat of this stuff instead of with baloons tied to it. Also I am sure a cup filled with air is denser than the sulpher hexafloride, so it would sink anyway, you would have to crush the cup up and make it into a bunch of little boat shapes that have very thin walls for it to work, complicated. |

Monday, January 15, 2007 8:48:48 PM Plus, your cups and plates are, of course, denser than air. Therefore, no floaty. |

Monday, January 15, 2007 8:48:13 PM I learned how it deepens your voice off of Daily Planet's Science In The City. That's where I learned it from. No, you couldn't float your cups or plates next to your chair. Why? Suplphur Hexaflouride is, as said, a heavier than air gas. Therefore it acts as a liquid. This means you would have to fill your whole house, or just a sealed up room, with enough Slphr Hxflrde to float the object at whatever level, just as you would with water. It's viscosity helps a lot, as it does not act like normal gas, which spreads out rapidly when released, whereas this has denser particles, therefore allowing it to act as a liquid.Helium and Sulphur Hexaflouride are awesome!

Monday, January 15, 2007 2:37:28 PM It looks pretty dense alright, the combined mass of the tinfoil and the air inside it would have to be less dense than the gas. Cool! |

Monday, January 15, 2007 1:39:45 PM Uh..."hexafluorid" is nothing. That's sulfur hexafluoride. Also, I doubt you could actually float on it. People are too dense. |
