Overmann, as another example, I think the very simple block designs of, say, the Powerpuff Girls or Samurai Jack are art, despite the fact that they are made out of essentially giant solid-colored rectangles and ovals. Do simple shapes with some artistic intent and aptitude and you end up with wildly dynamic shapes and compositions.

Overmann, I think you are reading my argument backwards. I do think Mondrian's paintings are art. Space painting man is kind of the opposite of Mondrian - his paintings "look cool" but were executed with no creativity or originality.

Making stickmen out of paperclips; definitely art. Copying your friend's stickmen: not art. Copying your friend's stickmen but placing them in an original geometric composition: art. Painting an original spacescape: art. Painting essentially the same spacescape over and over again because every landscape is created by peeling off layers of paint with crumpled up paper: not art. It would be possible to make artistic spacescapes using his methods, but this guy is not, because he doesn't have any sense of depth, color, contrast, value, or subtlety. He is repeating a bunch of steps.

Thomas Kinkade's crap is very bad art, despite its apparent complexity in production and passable realism, because there is no creativity or originality.

DiePSPolice, art is art. Would you argue that any number of Mondrian's paintings (a series of squares and rectangles) are not art simply because they were seemingly easy to produce? How about dribbling paint specks over a canvas, is that not art? What about making stickmen out of paperclips?

The level of simplicity or complexity used in the production of art does not define art itself, but rather it is how said art is perceived that defines it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who jumped when the painted the huge black mark.
I was like "NOOOO! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

Art or not, the planets looked really cool.
But I prefer Caravaggio.

Squiggly92:"you're just jealous that you will never be as good as he is. and i doubt that a little mexican with one arm made a better painting than this man did. if its true, that mexican has got some problems"
Actually i did do something like that. Ricardo the man that made that painting for me has taught me how to do that. I have sold many. And i can make something like that in like 5 minutes. Again, its not that hard and i'm pretty sure even a person with your intelligence would be able to make something like this.

^^ does that mean McDonald's is fine dining? The answer is No.

I can vomit on a canvas in far less time than this space painting took to get painted, and while it would not look as good, if I ate the right things I could probably make it more interesting.

you guys also have to remember that this man made the paintning in under 10 minutes. other artists probably spent more than that on most of their pieces

Pilanus: I would also have no qualms "selling out" the use of my skills. The comparison to a Van Gogh or Picasso is weak, however. Having a distinct style is not the same as having a limited bag of tricks. In any case, for example, Picasso exhibited a wide range of styles (realism in his early works to the cubism he is most famous for; painting and sculpture, etc.), and they all explored and grew in their craft.

But my main problem with this space planetscape guy is that he is almost the epitome of kitsch: "...kitsch is said to be a gesture imitative of the superficial appearances of art. It is often said that kitsch relies on merely repeating convention and formula, lacking the sense of creativity and originality displayed in genuine art."

He has no sense of overall structure in his painting, no sense of contrast (everything is cranked up to 11), no sense of color. His work is indistinguishable from any number of album or book cover art.

Yes, i have seen, better, but i would not say that his paintings are bad, in fact they are quite good. But to say that he needs to get a life or that his strengths on this painting were narrow, are probably the wong way to look at it. If i were him, and i loved painting, and could make money doing it, i would regardless of what other people would have me do to be "Productive" and an excessive use of rimlight in that painting does not nessicarily mean that he does it like that in every painting. Would you say that Van Gough, or Picasso, or Di Vinci, or Michelangelo were bad painters because they painted one picture with favor of a certian technique?

I'm not even a particularly good painter, and I can paint better than him. It's not art in the same way that color-by-numbers is not art. You paint by numbers and you end up with something that looks cool, but there is no artistry in it. He's got about 5 or 6 tricks with circular, square, and straightedged masks and spraypaint, so all his paintings look exactly the same. Rimlights are easy to draw, so everything has a rimlight on it. He can slightly move things around and make lots of sort-of-unique looking paintings, but not really. It would be as hard for him to draw a single human face as it would be for Michael Bay to direct a scene with honest emotion or drama - they're both the same: all flash, no substance. This guy is the Thomas Kinkade of sci-fi. Kinkade has endless, vapid mountains and warm hearths, and this guy has endless rimlit, randomly textured planets with streaky comets and rings. Blegh. It's like the Spice Girls of painting.

I'd see you come up with techniques to make a picture like that, DiePSPolice, and what makes you say it is not art?
