Saturday, January 20, 2007 1:34:51 AM I live in Northern Alberta. It gets that cold about 40 percent of the year. The water didn't freeze. Just the steam coming off it did. It's the same thing when you breath out in cold weather and the moisture in your breath freezws in front of your breath. |

Saturday, January 13, 2007 6:01:44 PM When it gets that cold, i tend not to go outside, because i find it hard to breathe... and because i'll get frost bite... that was cool though... once, i spat on the ground, and before it hit, it turned to ice, and bounced off! true story! |

Saturday, January 13, 2007 2:49:57 PM Wow, the amount of bad science in this thread is amazing. Yes, -40 degrees is the same temperature in C and F. Joeyhndc explained it pretty well. |

Saturday, January 13, 2007 1:35:01 PM Ok, let's see if i can break it dow for you guys: -40C and -40F are the same temperature, but the scale of both are different, where 1 C = 1.8 F, so as you go further away from the -40 line, the difference becomes greater and greater. For example, look at the difference between 32F and 0C, and compare it to the difference between 212F and 100C. Both are the same temperature in their respective scales, but the difference is way higher at boiling point because it's further away from the -40 point. |

Saturday, January 13, 2007 12:08:11 PM "does someone want to explain to me the chemistry that allows something to evaporate by become colder?"THe process quite easy when it is cold enough outside something with freeze because heat always goes from a hot surface to a colder one.The process of where the water freezes and evaporate is sublimation which is where a solid goes from being solid to a gas just because it is very cold. You can try this out if you leave ice cubes in your freezer long enough. |
