Vindicate believes commercials like this one turn women into sex objects. She's not wrong; it happens all the time, has happened in the past, and likely will continue for Eric Clapton knows how long. Sabre200000 and his wife believe a woman's sexuality is powerful and reassuring, regardless of it being used in a commercial for a crummy TV show ripoff. They aren't wrong either; women should be proud of being sexual people. But I suppose context is everything. The when and where is most important. ^ was any of that clever? I can't tell. |

She can't stand whiney "woman are oppressed by sexual advertising and anything physical that is there for entertainment" people like you. I showed her your comments and she laughed at them. (by the way she is a 4 year graduate pharmacist, so she's not some dumb blonde) She says there is nothing better than the days when she can surprise me in lingerie or something silly, but sexy. It makes her feel like a "woman" and is greatly powerful both emotionally and sexually. So take that as what it is, you're just an uptight prude...and a young one at that, who taught you this "old" way of seeing things...prob don't think for yourself. too bad :)

Well, I don't know what demographic most ads go for, but, for example, I doubt we'll ever see a sexy advert for a fiber diet supplement or Depends undergarments. I think mostly we see them on products geared toward a young, money-spending population. That being the case, sex. As for the disparity between men as sex objects and women, I don't condone either, but, I certainly see both. How many times recently have you seen Matthew McConnehey's (sp) chest and guns on magazine covers? How many ads for soap operas are on during the day that are geared toward women? It is wrong to reduce men and/or women to objects, but, it obviously works because that's what these companies are about--money. And if there was no money in it, they wouldn't do it. Bottom line. |

I find that I agree with Vindicate in that it can certainly be demeaning to a person's character by appearing to be no more than a nice bod. I guess the one rift I find is that, as each and every person on this planet has a vast array of complexity to them, I'd wager that it would be much more difficult to make someone's character as appealing in a mere 30 second promo. As to the whole Ginger/Mary Ann debate, it seems to me as though that promo had gone as far as to decide for us. It was very Mary Ann-based, wasn't it? |
