the same thing happened when we tried to cancel my grandma's account for AOL. the guy on the phone was giving her a really hard time (and remember, she's an old lady for crying out loud!), and so my mom grabbed the phone from her and started screaming at the guy to cancel the account.

I've heard this before... Oh, wait, that's because John answered my cancellation call too! I cancelled at 8.0 plus, and I'm not sorry for it. Now I have DSL and Mozilla, and I'm much much happier.

Wow. How the hell did he keep his composure? Even knowing it was being taped I would have lost it. Well done.

We kept getting more of the free trial everytime we tried to cancell. When we finally cancelled, they kept hitting our checking account month after month in an attempt to bill us for usage. SOBs!

Heh...this is why I have never, do not have, and will never have AOHELL.
But Vincent's head looked like a damn egg. I wanted to ake a friend egg. Out of his head. Ahaha. And then feed it to John and hope he gets food poisoning.

I doubt John really did get fired. I remember wanting to install AOL a few years ago because I thought the adverts were cool, thankfully my father said no =p
and IMO means in my opinion.

This came at a weird time. I found out today that when I cancelled my Xbox Live account over a year ago, they didn't actually cancel it. Well, other than the fact that I couldn't use it, they still charged us the money.

that's hilarious. i do feel bad for john, who got fired... but i have a feeling AOL tells its employees to have their people try to convince the customers not to cancel.

My boyfriend does the retention thing, and it's one of the pootiest jobs going, right up there with telemarketing. I don't think John there stuck to the script, but that is about what you're supposed to do. But I'm sure he did get fired, cos when an expose' like this comes out, someone's head has got to roll and it sure as hell won't be anyone in management.

BTW, I had a similar experience a couple years ago with AOL. I cancelled, they kept billing my account, I cancelled again, they kept billing my account, I threatened to sue, they stopped the account the same day and cancelled my bills.

Hey, they gotta pay for the distribution of all those ubiquitous, obnoxious CDs somehow, right?

Yeah I doubt he lost his job, althought he should have. If you read what he was saying, thats not a script. Esp, when he said look here one day you will grow up and see i was right. Scripts for CSR's bascally give the person like 4 or 5 chances to keep the account but after a certian time if the person wants to cancel it should be done. I really hope he got fired and then beat up and mugged in the parkinglot when he left.

People...John did not get fired. These people are trained to do just what he did. The statement from AOL (that her was fired) was just a cover to keep the public calm. It just didn't happen.

It truly is AOL-Hell.

meh when I worked for sprint I could probably see the exact same thing happen, they have something called a "Cancelation line" which is actually for retention and you're transfered here after about a minute or 2 of talking to a customer service rep.
