i bet they put the ants to work in a special clear substance, after ants died, they filled with plaster, then just simple cut around the plaster.. didn't think ants could be that interesting!

The guy in the picture is a professor at FSU - I had him for my Bio II lab - he is the most anal retentive teacher I've ever had

Woah, do ants really dig this deep into the ground? I thought they just went a few feet. (Shows what I know.)

I would rather see a leaf cutters nest, they put the "bad food" in a chambee which eventually gets so big a 7 foot tall, 1000 pound man could easily fit in it.... yup im a loser

it's amazing what you can make if you set your mind to it (oh, and have an endless supply of slave labor!)

I saw the actual episode on one of those late night nature channel shows. They located an any hill and then pour some molten metal into the hole until it cannot be poured anymore. Once the liquid hardens they begin to dig into the ground around the ant hill, sometimes they have to dig really deep (as the picture can attest). After they have dug all around the ant hill they pull out the huge chunk and then knock off the dirt around the chambers.
