im not sure if the duck and cover technique was actually designed for self protection, but more so as a way to keep the chaos of an A bomb down to a minimum. There's not real way for the average person to protect themselves against that, other than to get to your basement, hide under something strong and heavy and hope for the best

Those government-issued clothes and plywood must really work.

Great. The combination of low-to-the-ground-ization and cute-cartoon-ism will protect me and my family from 20,000 Rads blasting our way!

The best thing to do would be stand up with your arms out and hope for a quick death. If you are in the blast zone but not to close so you are dust then hope for a passing tree to take your head off because it is that or die slowly for radiation poisoning. If you could have survived but you didn't then you wouldn't know it...

The Russians targeted an atom bomb on my house once. Luckily, I survived by hiding under a newspaper.

Right. Ducking can save you from debris, but 85% of deaths by an atom bomb come by radiation a few months/years later.. Gamma radiations traspass mostly everything.
So conclusion:
If you see a flash. You are drated up.

Actually, there are three kinds of radiation: Alpha Particles (which CAN be stopped by paper)
Beta Particles (which can be stopped with glass)
Gamma Rays (stopped by lead)
The best thing you could do if there was an atomic 'flash' would be to run toward it, because that would be a whole hell of a lot more comfortable way to die than wasting away from 97% 3rd degree burns or lukemia.

I agree with Wookie12, but it a huge turn off to see that hes from the wastern US after you read his too-well-known rant.

And MysticRose your an idiot, if an atomic bomb exploded near you of course you wount survive. This is the best thing pple can do. They dont have the time to dig out a fallout shelter 1km deep then run in there...

What's worse anyway? Getting blasted or slowly disintegrated by radiation?

I'm not saying walls won't help you. I'm saying hiding under a desk won't.

I don't think you understand how the bomb works, but that is okay most people don't. When it explodes radiation goes flying and covers everything. If you are behind a wall, that will stop some of the radiation from hitting you. After this point the radiation is no longer acting like an explosion, it has covered every particle imaginable. Therefore it is no longer helpful to hide under the desk. This is where the fallout takes place, and it is a whole different talk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fal...

Uh...in order to be saved from the radiation, you'd have to hide under more than a desk...for a long time. It's estimated that in Hiroshima 70,000 people died from the blast alone.

It is funny to me, how misinformed all of you are. The whole part of the "duck and cover" would help you if a nuclear bomb exploded. Most people do not die from the explosion of the atom bomb, most people die from the radiation. That is why ducking and covering is so important. A wall will stop some of the radiation from hitting you, along with laying on the ground. The only error made is the fact that if you can see the flash, you are dead anyway.

Gregor Samsa, go turn into a giant bug and be abandoned by your family to die all alone.

You're entitled to your views, but it would be nice if you presented them with some civility.

Wasn't it funny that that guy on the tractor just kinda flew himself right under it... did he think to turn off the key??
