It's not like we're dumb, lol. More likely than not, we've taken the class before in some form. And, y'know, we just have a degree in the subject. I've never had any complaints about the way I grade essays. I'm pretty fair.

Professors don't grade the papers anyway, we as grad students have to! But, if they have programs to generate papers, I guess they have them for grading too.

ehh....don't be so quick, there, anglatay... a system very similar to that is mandated by our state (WV) for -not colleges- but the public school system. it rates 11th graders in a mandatory writing evaluation (rated zero through six, six being the best possble score)...surprisingly, out of the approx 200 11th graders of our school, under ten recieved a six, and under 30 recieved a five.

in addition to what was mentioned, the system also looks for repeating words (outside of common articles such as "the" or "of")...so spreading the word "chimpanzee" throughout an essay wouldn't work....

however, i'm also not in favor of this idea, not because it is less work for falculty, but because it seems too inefficient and error prone.

It's ridiculous. We as students are paying tuition so that teachers and professors can educate us, and give us the benefit of their own years of education by correcting our assignments and tests. If a computer can grade the tests, why can't a computer teach the class too? The teachers can have plenty of time for "fun stuff" when they're unemployed. Oh, but it's only fun if you're getting paid for it.
Also, if the students are spending days and possibly weeks to write these essays or study for these tests, I think the teachers should *want* to mark them by hand, to see whether or not they're doing their job of teaching the class properly.
Personally I would take it as a sign of disrespect if a prof of mine took one of my essays that I spent many hours working on, and just fed it into a machine. Our job is attending class, taking notes, and submitting assignments. Your job is teaching class and marking assignments. If we do our job, you should do yours.

That's great. As long as you write something original and use "unusual words" it doesn't matter that it's a piece of s#xt. You'll still get a good grade while the teachers are kicking back in the staff lounge smoking crack and thinking up other ways to get outta doing their job. The next time I hear about a teacher's strike because they want more money I'm going toi tell them to sit down, shut up, and grade the f'n papers themselves.

"What you're learning really, is how to cheat the system." Unbelievable. My kid would not be going there.

"A second time around, Jones scattered "chimpanzee" throughout the essay, guessing unusual words would yield him a higher score.

He got a six. "

The statement that irked me the most was that teachers could now assign more essays and assignments without fearing the workload of grading them. Hmmm....no mention of the extra workload for the students who have to write them, while their teachers "focus on the fun stuff".

Link: Computers Now Grading Students' Writing [Rate Link] - I hope they lower the tuition now that the professors don't have to do any work.

Geez, I would feel ripped off if I was a student there.
