So really you could stream any lecture, class or meeting to anyone, everywhere with instant translation... pretty epic!

Automatic translation is adequate for usually getting a decent sense of the meaning across. It's not adequate for a lecture, class or meeting.

You can check this easily using Google's language tools, which are pretty good as far as automated translation goes.

A lecture, class or meeting in which nobody speaks? Can't be many of those.

Also...a handheld computer doing realtime OCR and translation on a constantly moving image seems a bit far-fetched to me. Maybe for a few pre-programmed phrases, with big, clear lettering.

@patchouly So, you would have me believe that a phone can perform image processing, optical character recognition, and translation faster than a high-end desktop workstation? Okay...

@ Oldollie. It actually is that fast. I tried a demo of it, on my iPod, about a year ago. It is, indeed, instant.

Although i would really like this (i think this would work wonders for Asian / Western typography) i als think there is a drawback.
Language is more than a set of characters lined up to form a word or sentence.
It's also something cultural.
If we would only focus on what something translates to and not what it means we still have a barrier.
the Dutch "luister nou even pik" (mainly heard in Rotterdam), translates to "listen to me penis" while it means "relax buddy, and hear what i have to say".
I think it will take a while for an AI to see that difference.

Speak to locals in any foreign country, talk to inlaws from other countries who speak a different language... language barrier gone. Is it a revolution towards a sense of unity and availability to access the entire world, or is it a tool to impose a sense of unimportance or irrelevance from one culture to the other, eventually proposing a unified "global" culture because... well we're basically there already!

This really exists, but it's nowhere near that fast.
