Friday, April 29, 2005 11:38:04 AM If he didn't eject before he landed in the water, there is probably no way he could've got out of the plane. (doors can't open underwater) |

Friday, April 29, 2005 8:24:58 AM It looked like he had a landing gear failure. I didn't see him punch out though, but the photo quality wasn't too good. |

Friday, April 29, 2005 4:33:12 AM Landing on an aircraft carrier is possibly the most dangerous thing a pilot can do during normal operating procedures - more so at night, but during the daytime, you're trying to put the back wheels of and arrester hook of your aircraft down on a patch of the carrier deck that's about 20 meters square. You're moving at over 150 mph, and the ship is moving forward while rolling side to side and bumping up and down. Navy pilots successfully land on carriers daily, but unfortunately, lives are lost from accidents such as this. I don't know if this guy made it or not; he could have ejected seconds after touchdown, but he stayed to try to prevent damage to the carrier, loss of deck crew, and possibly even prevent his aircraft going over the edge. It certainly wouldn't be funny if he died; he'd have died trying to prevent loss of life and damage to the carrier. People like that pilot should be commended on their bravery, and remembered if their lives are lost. |
