I'd rather have trashy tabloids than the Daily Mail. Trashy tabloids are money-grubbing, tasteless and depressing, but the Daily Mail is malicious propaganda and genuinely harmful to society. It`s one of the worst things in the UK today.

wow...I thought American tabloids were trashy.
This isn't a tabloid. Tabloids at least pretend to be newspapers. This is an example of a style of magazine which is filled with a disturbing mixture of fluffy happy stories about pets and babies and horrific stories about foul abuse and murders. They also usually contain one or two stories about attention-grabbing scenarios that are unlikely but possible. For example, one I saw on a table at work had as one of its title stories the tale of a woman who found out her husband was cheating on her and is now in a relationship with his mother. It`s likely that little if anything in these magazines is genuinely true.
There are trashy tabloids in the UK, but they`re nowhere near this level of trashiness. Except for The Sport, but that`s openly intended as a joke and isn`t anywhere near as nasty. The Sport is about soft porn and silly "news" stories (and a bit of sport).

All newspapers pander to their demographic. However, I often fear to what extent the papers are appeasing their readers, and to what extent the readers are blindly accepting what they're reading.
My father accepts everything he reads in The Sun as being factual and black and white (to the extent that he believes even the blatant urban myths they`ve printed over the years). I work with several people who go one step further--that of accepting unquestioningly everything reported in The Daily Sport (AND the Sunday edition), particularly the agony pages. It`s often enough to make you want to take an overdose and then immure yourself in the basement.
