Thought about this; You lift your arms up at the top of the boing, so that you can bring them downwards the bottom of the boing. This enables you to provide the energy input to the system necessary to sustain the simple harmonic oscillation. Brer Heffalump is doing the same, but lacking arms, he uses his trunk.

@ OldOllie: Actually, you got me thinking. I suppose the only "whip effect" of the trunk would occur on the trampoline bounce at the bottom of the cycles, right? I'm thinking there`d be some delay in the trunk`s reversal of motion relative to the rest of the animal, yes? But once both body and trunk had attained an upward velocity, you`re right: trunk and body would fall at the same rate together, aside from wind resistance.
I think the person modeling this was misled by thinking that the trunk would behave similarly at the bottom and the top of the bounces.
Feel free, of course, to expand on this or correct anything I`ve botched. Kind of an interesting thought experiment, actually.
