Do you guys have any thoughts on male vs. female? @Squrlz4: You're on the right track! Especially for a first time cat owner? Kittens can be a handful! As for male vs female: since they`re "fixed" there`s really not too much difference. I`ve see both genders be super mushy snuggly monkeys, or aloof, disinterested ill-tempered beasts. I think (but it`s just an opinion) that fixed females tend towards the extremes, while fixed males are more "in the middle". The opposite of humans? Mostly? Individual personalities over-rule other outward variables.
And feed your kitty GOOD, dry catfood! Like IAMs or MaxCat! Cheap food isn`t good in the long run.
Brushing teeth is also a good idea. Once a week from when they`re young & you`ll prevent late-life tooth problems!

Squrlz: Don't matter cause if you rescue from a shelter the surgery is already done. Trick is to keep them from getting fat and lazy after the hormones are gone. My wife says I should walk our cats and I always say back, Oh you mean drag them up the hill?

@ Schecky, Ani, Carmium, and 5Cats: Thank you all for the information; I appreciate it. Amazing how much the personalities can differ, isn't it? I sincerely hope I don`t get a "clothes pisser," Ani--that would be hard to deal with!
Based on what I`ve heard and what you guys are telling me here, I`m leaning toward a tuxedo cat from a shelter that`s older than one year. Do you guys have any thoughts on male vs. female?
I`m taking babysteps on this project, so it will probably be awhile before I adopt yet. The thought of being responsible for another creature for 10 to 20 years is a bit daunting. But I do think I need a kitty.

@Squrlz4: Posters below are correct! All cats can be very sweet or really rotten. Some breeds are known for certain traits, but most cats are "mixed" and they all have their own personalities. Going to a shelter to find a kitty is good! Breeds are for rich folks who already have a couple of cats, I think.
Getting a cat who's over 1 year old is good too: you can tell exactly what their personality is like. Kittens are great, and everyone wants them, so give an older cat a chance!!
