If anything, this is an argument against redistribution of wealth in the name of equality. In the real world we are all NOT equal, not by a long shot. However, here in America I contend our Constitution gives us all equal opportunity. I guarantee you a whole lot more people would be out of work and much more poor if we didn't have those that can and are willing to do great things and build big companies. If you want to sit behind your excuses like "I don`t have any money` or "I`m the wrong skin color" or whatever, then you`ll simply remain at the station you are. Those that get it move past that. My folks made too much for me to get any grants so I worked two jobs and went to school at the same time. If you want to move ahead stop voting for the lefties that constantly bar you from where you want to go. Take a good look before you flame me, it`s not conservatives that are holding you back. Not at all.

turdburglar-Intelligence isn't genetic. (remember that there are poor WHITE people too.)

FYI, `genetics` does not automatically equate with `race`.

Gypsybard-
the "food" they can afford, (fast food, junk food, etc.)
Fast food and junk food are not cheaper than nutritious food....just easier. I`ve seen way too many `poor` people using their EBT cards (you know, `free` food) for crap with little to know nutritional value. I`ve also seen them buying package after package of ground beef because `EBT don`t pay for dog food`.

@Tatung 42. It`s the old `nature vs. nurture` argument. It`s actually a combination of both.

There was a story recently where before DNA testing, a baby born to rich parents was accidentally switched with a baby born to poor parents.

Fast forward to today, and the baby born to poor parents but raised by rich parent ended up going to college and then running his own real-estate business. The other child ended up living off welfare.

low achievement -> poverty -> low achievement

It's part of the reason for the poverty cycle.

What you don`t see from a chart of averages is the spread. There are a lot of rich people who fail to take leverage their advantages and poor people who rise above their station.

Society has a responsibility to enable the poor to elevate themselves, but that responsibility is limited because freedom dictates that the poor get to make their own life choices.

However, if your society has a widening wealth gap among residents (excluding new immigrants) then one or both of these two processes is broken.

The government (and therefore the rich and middle classes) needs to do more for the poor and the poor must do more for themselves and the nation.
