it seems that a lot of debt is owed to the future in the form of bonds. When those bonds have to be paid off we simply issue more bonds to pay for them - it's called kicking the can on.

We mostly owe the money to privately owned central banks in the form of interest on money they created outed of thin air when they purchase government issued securities.
It really is quite an ingenious little scam, and we're all paying the price for it. The greatest criminals in the world are bankers and the politicians who got into bed with them.
