Well said; further to that he saved the idea. Up to this point the event horizon was not compatible with the General Theory of Relativity, which states that for an observer in a sealed container in free fall the universe would be the same everywhere. The event horizon did not fit this, and Hawking's idea resolves the issue. It saves black holes, rather than killing them.

He didn't kill off the idea, he expanded on it. Black holes exist but things sucked in get spewed out also.
