@ Gerry: I sure wish more Americans had your view of the matter. What we have now is a political system filled with mediocre individuals.

I'd take one flawed great individual for any thirty or forty of the spotless sort.

Great men always have great flaws. It's a package deal. That`s something we don`t tolerate nowadays. People want angelic men with no mistakes in their past and certainly not allowed to make an error or have a bad habbit .

@ Gerry: LOL re: the hairstyle. Franklin is fascinating. Along with "air baths," he used to--in an age when most people didn't even swim--float nekkid on his back in a lake near Boston and let a kite pull him across the water. No information on where the kite string was attached.

When he traveled to London early in life, he spent so much time consorting with prostitutes he later reflected he was lucky he didn`t contract a disease. When I read his maxims regarding controlling one`s own "venery" (as they called sexuality in those days), I get the strong sense he was really trying to reform himself.

Honestly, I do love both Franklin and Jefferson. I love them faults and all.

S4S, Well, obviously Franklin was straight. No gay man would have a hair style like that. Jefferson in commonly known to have been in love with his slave Sally Hemmings. He freed their children.

Also about Franklin, besides loving beer he often took "air baths". Walking through the woods naked. He wrote about the benefits of getting naked the old pervert.

@ Gerry and Draculya: From what you've said, Gerry, it makes total sense that Washington was a closeted gay. I look forward to reading a good bio of him this year. Jefferson and Franklin, however, were pretty clearly hetero.

Jefferson married Martha Skelton at 29, by whom he had six children; after becoming a widower, he developed an intense crush on a beautiful artist of his day, Maria Cosway; and later, of course, there was his pretty slave Sally Hemings, who appears to have been his bedmate at Monticello, and by whom Jefferson had several more children.

Franklin, for his part, was well-known for being quite the ladies` man and never met a beautiful and intelligent woman with whom he could resist flirting.

Really interesting topic, guys; I`ve enjoyed this.
