Well a patent does not itself prove cannabis has medicinal properties - but of course it does prove the US government Department of HHS believes it does which is the root of the irony here.
In the US you can patent ideas or inventions that don't work, with the exception of perpetual-motion machines (and a few of those slip through).

Angillion, "hey make more money than they would taxing it? How?" The DEA doesn't make a dime if it`s taxed, but every law enforcement agency, from local cops to DEA & FBI get to confiscate property they sell at auction. Cars, boats, houses. Large piles of cash. All of that goes directly into their budgets. They wouldn`t get a dime if i was just taxed.
now add the prison industry. A passive pot smoker is much cheaper to house than violent criminals. More profit margin. Drug Cartels don`t want it legal, they`d lose their monopoly.
Nope, no one involved in the Pot Industry wants it legalized. How else do you explain a non-addictive beneficial substance being banned ?
