Ever seen a satellite photo? What does it look like? When viewing the globe from a fixed orbit (e.g. at the equator), that's what you`re going to get. It`s no more geopolitically motivated than physics is.

Case in Point: In 1998 the US Navy decided that the use of the sextant for celestial navigation was `obsolete`, so it dropped that course. In a bit of irony, the very same week they drop the course, the Global Positioning System mulfunctioned and was pretty much useless for about a week.
