Checking a consumer price index calculator, it seems $1.70 today has the same buying power as $.80 in '86. So, if it`s around $3.40 today, gas prices have increased about twice as much as the average goods.
Also, around here, it`s around $2.33 per litre, which would be around $8.84 per US gallon. (Which is of course a pointless thing to mention without also taking into consideration wage level etc.)
