Lauriloo: WHAT's pronounced "een"?
I was taught the latin word "in" is pronounced "een", as in *een* excelsis deo but people argue about that. They also argue how to pronounce "excelsis" because there is an old latin way and a new latin way. Once one is taught and sung a song a certain way for years it`s hard to accept it done any other way.
From the book "THE CORRECT PRONUNCIATION OF LATIN ACCORDING TO ROMAN USAGE"
I i (ee) is pronounced like "ee" in meet or "i" in machine. There is no modification of the "ee" sound of "i" in Latin. The sound of "i" as in the words "tin," "is," "milk" is not to be given to this vowel. It is to be spoken and sung in a positive manner of "ee" without exception. Final syllables containing this vowel are softened but there is no loss of vowel quantity in so doing.
