I've also read recently that Cameron never really wanted to do the movie Titanic. What he REALLY wanted to do was explore the wreck of the real Titanic and basically came up with the movie pitch (including the idea of footage of expeditions to the real Titanic) to basically get funding for the real-life expeditions ... oh, yeah, and we`ll film a movie while we`re at it ... which became a huge hit (bonus!)

Breaking up with a longtime girlfriend to feel "sad?" What about doing it with .... ACTING?
It was his first major role, his big break, and he was playing a Jew in Nazi Germany. Hell of a stretch to act that when all you've known in your life is a nice, contented life in the comfortable luxury of being fairly well off by the standards of a very rich country.
He was acting. A Jew in Nazi Germany had it far, far worse than he did *after* he made himself suffer. He made himself suffer in order to get a hint of it so that he could act the rest convincingly. It was still almost all acting.
