I am not sure that your pedantry is much comfort to the 11,000 (and rising) dead, the bereaved and the great many homeless.

These people have just suffered a 7.2 magnitude quake, then a monster storm, no matter what you wish to call it.

Yes. You are correct. The Pacific Ocean is larger, so the storm has more time to ramp up. The ocean off the Indonesian coast is also hotter than the Caribbean Sea, because of the Indonesian Throughflow. Hot ocean = stronger storms by and large.

That wasn't my point. My point is, they are the same weather phenomenon.

On the surface yes, but being in a completely different basin can mean they can get a hell of a lot stronger.

There has been no hurricane to date that's ever been stronger than the strongest Typhoons.
