@Paperduck, asexual and sexual reproduction both have their advantages. Asexual reproduction produces an almost perfect copy. This means it takes many more generations to adapt and also means a single disease or change of circumstance could wipe out the entire population but it is more efficient and doesn't require a mate. Sexual reproduction on the other hand creates variability (in a more stable way than random mutation) which lends itself to adaptability and greater flexibility. The other advantage of sexual reproduction is that partner selection makes it less likely that undesirable traits will get passed on as they are less likely to get selected as a mate.

All we need to do is take the scientific approach, define life as best as we can but be prepared to re-define if required. that's the great thing about science ... it`s not set in stone.
