If you can make your guitar sing, THEN you can sit down to master the fireworks. Right, because any kid can learn how to make a guitar "sing" with a few months of practice. It take many, many years of hard work and dedication to learn how to do the fireworks, so it's natural that the "singing" would come first.
That's a great quote. You think of a song like "Jessica." Betts` solo begins with this really joyful, melodic phrase that just sweeps you right up. It`s simple, yet completely effective.
And the guitar solos in "Hotel California" are just perfect examples of nicely dramatic solos that rely on melody, not flash. Ditto the solos in classics like "The Wind Cries Mary," "Sunshine of Your Love," etc.
