The water has a very basic pH, so when things die in the water their bodies become coated with the minerals in the water. The flamingos have to die in the water first, but the water itself is extremely corrosive and could even be a contributing factor to the death.

The Overtoun Bridge one is almost pure fiction. The Daily Mail (!) reported 50 'suicides`, not 500 but there are actual records of less than half a dozen dogs falling from the bridge.
