What was impressive about The Monkees was that, when they started playing their own instruments and writing more original material around the "Headquarters" album, there was no break in quality from the earlier records that had studio musicians and famous professional songwriters working for them. They proved that they were the real thing.

The Monkees are one of my favorite bands. I remember waking up about three or four in the morning to watch the tv show. It made no sense and that's what I loved about it.
