@Ollie, bear in mind the specific SUB-GENRE the band falls into revolves tightly around repetitive bass hooks because it's meant to be almost hypnotic and trancy... Most of their music sound like that because they design the sound to trigger specific wave functions in the auditory center of your brain... TOOL is actually fairly heavy on my "meditation" playlist on iTunes... (along with many tracks by Pink Floyd, Ascension of the Watchers` ENTIRE `Numinosum` album, and several tracks from Yes, Rush, ELP, Enya, Enigma, and the Japanese guitarist Kitaro...

@OldOllie That's how TOOL is... It`s part of their specific sound. Well, their sound specifically sucks. I got bored in the first 30 seconds and started clicking the progress bar to here something different, and everywhere I clicked, it sounded exactly the same.
I`m not that familiar with their music, but I would wager that if you took all the ideas from an entire album, you might have enough to make one decent song.
Of course, my idea of a "good song" is Yes - Close to the Edge, ELP - Tarkus: Eruption, Genesis - Supper`s Ready, Transatlantic - Stranger in Your Soul, or Pain of Salvation - Used. (I think they`re all on YouTube if you`re interested.) Each one of those tracks has more ideas in it that these Tools have come up with in their entire careers, that is if this is truly representative of their work.
