I wrote a review where I pretty much said the same thing. The writers based this movie off the book in so much as they titled it World War Z, and then parted ways.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to add that I've both read the book and seen the movie. I was disappointed to learn that the movie adaptation would not follow the book, at all, but I actually still enjoyed it. Yes, it`s a giant cliche`, but what movie isn`t these days? I like to think of this movie as having happened in the world of the book, a sort of extension, if you will. Maybe that was their intention all along.
