"War Tubas" were for listening for the sounds of aircraft engines. They funnel the quietest sounds along the tubes into the listener's ear(s) which amplifies the sound.
When it`s really quiet? Especially at night? You can hear the drone of the engines from a long ways off! Then triangulate the sound to pinpoint their exact movement. Worked pretty well in the Pacific Ocean! Not as well as RADAR of course...

Love these historical insights and yes @bacon_pie - that is one of mine too how they just sit there eating their lunch god knows how many feet of terra firma is just WTF to me
