Andrew155, with regards to starting everyone on an "equal economic and social footing" as I mention, of course conservatives are the problem. They are the entire country's problem and have been since Reagan!

Lollotilol.. Privatize your schools, go ahead. At the same time, dismantle teachers unions. Yeah, Finland here, we can't possibly know how it`s done right... Oh, wait, we don`t have private schools and 100% of teachers are in the union.. We must have the worst schools in the world..

Remove teachers tenure, allow parents to have school vouchers, hire truancy cops. The resulting system will shake out the crap from the public schools, keep kids from running the streets and raise test scores.

lauriloo, you would be a fool to discount a philosophy degree from Columbia as 'not that big of a deal`. It`s not the degree I have, but the fact is that you have no idea if it`s easier than Engineering or Business. You just assume it to be. You just made it up.
The biggest fact in the world is that a Philosophy degree requires more mental effort than a Business degree at Columbia. Why? Because a Business degree is designed mostly for networking and job finding, not for research, writing, and academic involvement.
As for the Engineering program, there were no Americans in the Engineering program, but I had a German friend in it. It`s mostly Chinese students who get there under falsified scores on the GRE and the TOEFL and with a Personal Statement written by a service in China. The TA`s are Chinese, so they can coast. The school looks the other way because of the money, the kids are mostly Communist Party leaders` children.
