Yes, the Monkees were a damn good band. It came down to the writing. At first they had people like Nel Diamond, Gerry Goffin-Carole King, Tommy Boyce-Bobby Hart, John Stewart (of the Kingston Trio) writing songs for them. By the time the HEADQUARTERS album came out, it was clear that, not only could the band play their own instruments, but also write some fantastic songs, too. Sure the Monkees were created for televsion, but they were a quality creation. No comparison to the pre-fab bands that came later on.
