So... they virtually destroy the value of the logs, pay somebody to bore them out with what has to be unusual and expensive equipment, pack them with smokes, and carefully disguise the holes, all to avoid tobacco taxes? This is profitable?

Even if they were only avoiding £1 of tax per pack, that's a lot of money. Bear in mind that the logs can be shipped back and re-used.

To put it into perspective in the UK £6.17 is tax on a pack of 20 cigs. So if this shipment had been destined for the UK almost £432k in tax would have been avoided. That seems worth the effort.

I want to know how they bored out those logs. How the heck would you drill out such a big hole? And is it worth it just to smuggle in cigarettes? Weird.

@ Intrigid (Addendum): I just checked and equipment to weigh railroad cars exists. So perhaps it *was* the weight that tipped the customs agents off.

@ Intrigid: Actually, these logs were being brought into the country on a freight train. So I don't think it was the weight that tipped off the inspectors.
