handimanner: Don't know if that`s speculation or if you`ve seen it/done it like that, but yeah! It reminded me that I did a newsletter cover illustration years ago by more or less scribbling on tracing paper over a photo of a logging locomotive, and it turned out surprisingly well! Got a good reception, at least.

Nope. You don't know what you are talking about. The illustrations are composed of the scribbles, the shapes, the shading, everything. Look closely, look at the dark and light areas. Look at the contours, the edges. These are not just good drawings scribbled over.
