there is no "L" in Nihongo the "R" is used

A while back, while working in California, I had a buddy from HQ teach me a phrase in an attempt to make a point (the company I worked for then was HQ'd in Japan.)

As I was speaking back what I perceived, I heard some cute little giggles from the cubicles on the other side of the room.
I asked Masa: "What did they say?"
The first time I`d ever seen him crack. "Horry sh*tah, he sounds rike an Amelican!!"
The two women laughed even louder. Masa normally has almost no accent.
Turns out that joke is over there, too.

Between regional dialects, L`s and R`s are used interchangeably. I suspect it`s like people switching F with TH. There is no phonetic equivalent to V (far as I can tell) which is enunciated as B by people who`ve not practiced.
