@RdDan: I smoked for 17 years and quit the same way. Everyone asked me why I wasn't using the gum or patches and I kept saying "What`s the point of quitting smoking if I remain addicted to nicotine?" All anyone needs to quit something is the willpower and backbone to stick to it. Actually being ready to quit and Wanting to quit helps quite a bit too!

I worked with a guy I really liked some years back, and he quit smoking overnight. He felt a funny wheeze in his chest and went to the doctor, who promptly sent him for tests that showed cancer. That did it for him. He never smoked again in the few months he had left.

I smoked for 12 years 'till i quit in 2004. I just stopped, no patches or gum or owt. I still believe this is the best way to do it.
In the two or three years following me quitting two dear friends of mine also quit using the same method.
It can be really tough to quit, i certainly found it hard going but after a couple of months the crave to have a cigarette disappeared. I observed a group of friends having a smoke and felt no urge to join in. I knew i had the addiction beaten.
