The current pope seems fairly sincere in his desire to clean up sexual and financial corruption in the Vatican and wider RC church.

What are the odds that

(a) He'll succeed in cleaning it up.

(b) He`ll become bogged down in the ancient, bureaucratic, secretive system and give up.

(c) He`ll give it his best shot and be dead of `natural causes` within 18 months.

@5Cats, there's records of the RC church covering up the pedophile scandals from over 400 years ago... and right up `til now, too. A thorough `housecleaning` has been in order for centuries, so I agree with you that it needs to happen and that it`s highly unlikely we`ll see it in our lifetimes... but we can hope all the same I suppose, eh?

I am a devout Catholic and there are so many of us that are as horrified and angry as everyone else. Please know two things, most of us want those that commit these horrific acts and those that cover them up to held accountable for their actions to the fullest extent. Also, it is so very disappointing that this becomes the face of the church and continues to completely bury the endless good works and decent things I've seen so many do for decades on end. So many of us really try to live a Christ-like life in service to others and give selflessly. So many of us have none of the intentions so often ascribed to us like brain-washing or money-grabbing or being power-hungry. For many of us none of that exists. It`s a free option to choose to live a good life. For the record I have never been required to give even a single penny to the church.

It was always puzzled me: If your group's doctrine says one thing and your proclivities are another, you have proof you don`t belong in that group.
If you find a number of others, leaning toward preponderance, in the same group, with the same proclivities, wouldn`t it be safe to say the doctrine in not aligned with the truth?

So, why stay in the group? Are you there simply to be with similar others?

Maybe that`s it. It`s a gang. Maybe it`s a hand-gesturing, incense burner chain swinging, self-flogging gang that speak Latin code by day and bumps it out like the dentist at night.

The previous Pope got a get-out-of-jail card and is now on definite house arrest as a part of the agreement (as it is technically still a country, they can refuse to hand him out) This conveniently saves the current papacy of all the responsibilities.
