If we just acknowledged the fact that sex and gender are completely different things, it would solve a lot of problems.
I'll use myself as an example. I`m male. That`s sex, not gender.
I could use clothing, hairstyling, make-up, maybe even cosmetic surgery, to make myself look more feminine. I could use diet and exercise to give myself a more feminine shape (I do weight training, so I have an increasingly masculine shape). I could change my name to a feminine name. I could train my speech to use a more feminine pitch. All of that is about gender (masculinity and feminity) and not sex (male and female). I`d still be male. I`d be a very feminine man, but I`d still be a man.
To change *sex*, I`d have to have hormone treatment and sex change surgery. If you don`t do that, you haven`t changed sex. You may have changed your gender, but you haven`t changed your sex.

So... what some people want is to allow is, say, a male to be able to simply claim he is female, change his name and gender legally, dress like a woman, use the women's washroom, and never have to undergo any reassignment treatment? Am I understanding this right?

What is this crap? I've never heard anything like this, not even remotely close to it..It`s one of those occasions where you`re looking for that Onion mark. I still won`t believe that this is true, forced sterilization hasn`t happened in decades.
