I had a 2000AD subscription all through the 80s. Even then I recognised the politics of it. It was warning us about things like excessive police powers, surveillance, genetic modification and social engineering. It parodied these in its stories as a straw man. I admit that it has influenced my politics insofar as it helped to open my eyes to the abuses that have subsequently crept through society.

rob - I agree, it is how the media portrays things, but I am still shocked that anyone actually buys into the hype. If you look at the violent crime rates for America they might seem high. But if you realize that there are a few pockets of poverty and violence that bring down the national average. 99.9% of America is every bit as peaceful and normal as anywhere in europe. Maybe even more so. I know you get it, but there are a few turds who never will.

@turdburglar well that would probably be due to american media. most of the movies out of hollywood are action packed shootem ups while the biggest news reports are about crime and violence. since thats all the media portrays, thats all the rest of the world sees.

I remember grinning when reading about smoking-clubs because smoking was banned. When i look around now and see all the laws banning smoking i can only think that Judge Dredd was a glimps into the future.

robthelurker - You aren't just making that up? That`s funny, because I was just joking. Going by some of the comments made by some of the euro IABers, I get the idea that they picture America like the wild west. Everyone packs guns and is constantly dodging bullets.
