Angillion- not sure about the origins of the comparison, but I seem to remember football games are really quite old, the violence bit is self observed.
Football games are probably prehistoric. I tried to find the origin once, out of curiosity, and it seems to be too old to be known. Football goes back at least as far as widespread extant records in England. Those records are mostly legal or financial...and some of the earliest records of football are it being outlawed in England due to the excessive violence. Medieval England, home of war, combat for sport and a wide variety of blood sports, outlawed football for being too violent. It was a different type of football, but it shows that the association goes way back.

They're not maori warriors. they`re sportsmen. I don`t believe they should be allowed to do it. Can you imagine England coming out prancing around, pretending to slay a dragon (as per St George), The French coming out and then running away? or Scotland coming out with stupid painted blue faces shouting freedom?! no. Because it`s a sport. (Yes, I know the examples were stupid, but you get the idea).
The examples are stupid only because they`re mostly wrong. The Scots didn`t paint themselves blue (that was the Picts and at least some ancient Britons before the Roman period - the Scots weren`t even on this island at that time). The French fought everyone, usually repeatedly, so if you`re looking at old traditions they`d be armed and running at people, not away.
